This summer, I, along with Kirtana and my labmate Anais, will be working with Dr. Tamatha Fenster who specializes in gynecologic surgery. Her work complements our lab’s research in engineering model systems for understanding and developing solutions for conditions of the female reproductive system. Very quickly, on our first day, we were able to observe a hysteroscopy for uterine fibroid removal. While fibroids are non-cancerous growths, they can cause issues such as infertility, heavy menstrual bleeding, or pain that impacts daily life. Seeing a fibroid in real life is much different from that of the textbooks or science journals. It was particularly striking to see how unexpectedly “fluffly” the fibroid appeared during the surgery. What I did not know previously was that fibroids can embody various textures, ranging from dense to soft, which can influence the complexity of the surgery as well as clinical presentation of symptoms for the patient. Following the surgery, we met with Dr. Fenster and Dr. Wolf to discuss our project for the summer and identified several questions that would be important to answer first. Consequently, I spent the rest of my week reading through literature in preparation of our next project meeting.
