This week was much more focused on research than clinic, which I enjoyed since I am partial to hands-on activities compared to observational activities. Specifically, I performed histological staining—including H&E and Masson’s Trichrome of human patient samples from patients undergoing either total knee arthroplasty, total knee arthroplasty revision, or anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. Further, I spent a large amount of time imaging slides with the ZEISS Axioscan 7 (slide scanner), a very helpful machine available through the Histopathology Service at HSS. Because this machine saves so much time during slide imaging, I also used it to image around 200 slides for a labmate from my home lab in Ithaca. Regarding the clinical side of this week, I shadowed physical therapy, which was interesting after having heard my clinician mentor speak with patients about the importance of physical therapy in the post-surgery rehabilitation routine. I’m excited to continue shadowing next week, as well as image and analyze my newly stained slides.
