Week 1: Brenda

The first week of immersion has been very informative—from meeting doctors across various specialties to getting to know the students in my clinician’s lab (Dr. Alberto Carli at HSS), it has all been a lot of fun. This week, I’ve been attending my clinician’s group meetings, learning more about the project topic I’ll be working on and getting lab tours on what instruments I will be using this summer. While the scope of the project has yet to be fully defined, the project will focus on periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) in murine models. PJI is a serious complication of joint replacement surgery in which the joint becomes infected (often with bacteria) around the implanted prosthesis. For now, I’ve been getting familiar with the literature, completing required training, and scheduling lab-specific sessions for Week 2. The real fun begins then, when I’ll have OR and scrub access to observe surgeries. I’ll also begin attending his clinic days, which I’m really looking forward to! Dr. Carli and I get along great and I am looking forward to collaborating with him in the near future!
